A new hull for a New Year
Whew. What a good “vacation” from work the past few days. Have managed to get some work done and things should start getting even more interesting soon!
First, a picture of the stack of flat panels for the main hull. Only a few left to make that aren’t needed any time soon.
Even though it’s not as cold down here as it is for you Northerners – the drop in temperature has made the garage cold and epoxy thick.

Preparing to start the main hull
Long time since I’ve put anything in here, but due to work commitments, being sick for 2 weeks, and dad going out of town for vacation, not too much has happened lately.
Although I don’t have pictures right now (will take some in the next few days) – we are almost finished making all the required flat panels for the main hull. Decided it was best to do all this now while we have the large and flat working area of the strong back before we take away all the garage space with the form frames and hull.

Two floats….
are better than one…
This leaves a little extra room in the workshop….
and after shaving off some of the dried epoxy and fiberglass, we were able to flip the MDF sheets over and have a clean working surface to start tracing out main hull bulkheads
I’m trying some “new” fasteners from the Raptor Nail folks (well, they were a new product when they came out and I bought them… been sitting for a while)

Even more port float…
It’s taken way too long for us to get to this point. Between schedules and work commitments, just too much time has passed since starting the port float.
After Saturday’s burst of motivation, we finished fairing the float enough for primer, and I stayed up late cutting the chain plate and putting HD epoxy in to act as spacers
This left me with some small things to finish up Sunday morning (including LOTS of time with the vacuum) and enough time to shoot two coats of high-build primer before heading back home.

A burst of motivation from other F-Boats
Dad was playing at Wurstfest today in New Braunfels and I had to run an errand back up north. On the way back I decided to see if he wanted to meet at Canyon Lake (where we have our current monohull slipped) to see if the Yacht Club was open to the public for the Wurstfest Regatta. My hopes were that since the big Multihull race is Sunday, maybe there are some F-Boats just hanging around.

Port float deck and aft beam mounts
Shaped and glassed over chainplate and then put down base fairing for deck on port float
While this was drying I quickly touched up the daggerboard case and put it “away” on top of the scaffold until it’s needed before joining the main hull halves
Glued together the mold for the wing net rail supports (still need to round over the edges)
I did a little sanding before I ran out of steam, and then decided to play with the beam mounts that came in last week.

One step closer…
Outside face of the port float is ALMOST ready for primer. Put the last few bits of filler on the remaining pinholes late this evening but took no pictures. Am really impressed and pleased at how good this side came out, as neither of us thought it would look very good. The outside face of the port float was the very first half we planked, and part of it cracked moving it outside many months ago.

Joining daggerboard case
I’ll spare the boring details of fairing the float – suffice to say that we’re still making (slow) progress on it. Have been spending some time fairing and then some time doing other bits to keep prepping for the main hull.
This weekend I joined the daggerboard case. Due to some other commitments I was unable to rip the spacers needed during the week, and dinner out with friends of the family meant it was too late to fire up the saw Saturday evening.

Port float continues and daggerboard case prep
Very short weekend but still accomplished a few things…
Full layer of fairing compound on the outside face of the port float is being faired
Also painted the inside of the daggerboard case halves with the System Three Waterborne LPU – just brushed it on because, well, the only thing that MIGHT see the inside of the case are fish, and even then the board will be in the way. We aren’t concerned about the few runs and brush strokes in the finish 🙂

Port float fairing and daggerboard case
Not too much to write here as it’s been seen before, but the port float (outside face) is being faired first
also took the time to (ugh) fair the inside of the daggerboard case (very quickly, mind you) because of the issue with the port half of the case.
The starboard half is in primer right now and I ordered a few more gallons of high-build primer from System Three, as well as a quart of dark grey WLPU for the inside of the case.
